abstract

background: mercury (hg) is a major environmental contaminant due to its global ubiquity, tendency to bioaccumulate, and toxicity in wildlife. mercury accumulation in wetlands threatens critical breeding and foraging habitats of many fish and wildlife species. in this study, mercury concentrations were detected in different tissues of pike. methods: to achieve these purposes, 58 pikes (esox lucius) were hunted from anzali wetland. mercury concentration was analyzed by advanced mercury analyzer (leco, ama 254). t-test was used to determine any significant differences between muscle and liver samples. results: the results revealed a significant difference (t = 0.85) in mercury concentrations between the tissues, whereas no significant differences were found in mercury concentrations between pikes of different sexes. conclusion: this study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility assessment to recognize bioindicatory index usage and to determine restricted standards to human consumption. our data can contribute to the development of management programs for understanding the ecotoxicological status of anzali wetland and can help determine restricted standards for human consumption.

Mercury toxicity in livers of northern pike (Esox lucius) from Isle Royale, USA.

Many laboratory studies have documented that mercury can be toxic to fish, but it is largely unknown if mercury is toxic to fish in their natural environments. The objective of our study was to investigate the toxic effects of mercury on northern pike (Esox lucius) at Isle Royale, Michigan. In 124 northern pike from eight inland lakes, concentrations of total mercury in skin-on fillets ranged f...

Prevalence and intensity of parasites in pike (Esox lucius) from Anzali Wetland and evaluation of their impacts on biometric characticties in host fish

Parasite communities of pike (Esox lucius L. 1758) were calculated  in  Anzali Wetland along with evaluating  their impacts on biometric characticties of the fish host. A total of 4338 parasites from 11 diferent species were identified including: Ichthyophthirius mutifiliis (21.88%); Trichodina sp. (8.59%); Henneguya sp. (0.78%); Tetraonchus monenteron (60.94%); Diplostomum spathaceum (23.44%);...

Heavy metals Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in tissue, liver of Esox lucius and sediment from the Anzali international lagoon- Iran

Levels of contaminants in fish are of particular interest because of the potential risk to humans consuming them. This paper examines the levels of cadmium, lead, zinc and copper in liver and muscle tissue of Esox lucius and in sediments from the Anzali international wetland in Iran. The wetland is a nursery and feeding habitat for fish species both from the lagoon and the Caspian Sea, which ar...
